CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT Our trip took us to the Yellowstone, Flathead, Blackfoot, Clark Fork, Rock Creek, Bitterroot, Madison, Big Hole, Beaverhead, and even a few “secret” spots. Carl Stringer tries to figure where to head next. Paul and I spent a few days chasing cutthroat on the Middle Fork of the Flathead in Glacier National Park before meeting up with our friend Abby Montgomery. She scored a couple days away from rowing clients, so we hit a stretch of river on the Kootenai that was new to all of us. After donating a fly to a fish on the previous cast, Abby rigs up again. Paul and I struck out four days in a row on the Blackfoot. We called our longtime friend, Shiloh Kerr, for help. Three days passed and we were still skunked. In classic trout bum tradition, Shiloh talked Paul into drinking a booty beer in order to get rid of our bad luck. It didn’t work. 090 JONATHAN FINCH
