CLOCKWISE FROM LEFT After getting skunked for two weeks on the Blackfoot River, Shiloh Kerr and Paul Heffernan float through the river’s Box Canyon section on a late afternoon. Even in these beautiful waters we were unable to find the trout we were looking for. We were, however, greeted by the call of a mountain lion high off the canyon walls. Paul Heffernan doing his best Brad Pitt impersonation on the Blackfoot River. Unfortunately, Brad Pitt is not only better looking than both of us combined, but he was also able to catch fish here, and we were not. An old guide friend promised us there was a forgotten tributary in northern Montana that was worth checking out. More specifically, he claimed, “What it lacks in trout per mile it makes up for in two-footers.” After a few days on the water we only experienced the lack of trout per mile, but we did find a few northern pike. Here, Paul Heffernan attempts to remove a streamer without severing an artery. THE FLYFISH JOURNAL 087
