TOP TO BOTTOM One summer day while looking for large fish during a famously thick PMD hatch on the Frying Pan, I witnessed this rainbow trout sipping the insects. It was in a smooth piece of water with a deep hole carved by a back eddy, and this trout just kept casually, yet carefully, eating the flies as they slowly drifted by. One day I photographed him. On another visit, I lured him to my hand with a carefully placed dry fly. I had seen this type of image before and even witnessed forms of it on the river, but I had never been able to capture it through the lens. I hate the expression, but this one was a “bucket list” image for me—for years. 094 DEREK JOHNSTON
