CLOCKWISE FROM LEFT Rain falls as fading light shimmers on Ruedi Reservoir. When I was a child, I was taught that a killdeer that appeared to have a broken wing was trying to lure you away from its nest. This meant you were close. Walk and look carefully for the eggs. They are at your feet, protected only by Jackson Pollock-like camouflage. When I first spotted this large black bear, it was on its hind legs scratching its back on a standing dead tree. I snuck in on him when he went back to feeding on all fours, but a change of wind blew my cover and he quickly stood upright. I carefully slipped away after capturing our brief encounter. Where I live, June is the month for mule deer fawns. Over the years, I have had several fawns born near my home that frequented my yard. I watched this little one settle in for a nap and then quietly approached to capture the moment. 090 DEREK JOHNSTON
