CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT As a trout fisherman, I had always stared into prime looking holes wondering what lay beneath the surface. Dipping a camera into the Pan revealed how dense the trout population can be in certain places. Flowing water with long exposures was my first true photographic passion. The camera can capture what the mind’s eye can only imagine. I’ve never tired of this transformation through the photographic medium. I have always called the first hatches on the Frying Pan “March Midge Madness.” On the best days, the river is covered in midges. Trout that have had a limited supply of bugs through the long winter take full advantage. The western slope of Colorado is home to Merriam’s wild turkey, and March and April are the months to witness them strutting their stuff. Their heads become a kaleidoscope of color and texture this time of year. 088 DEREK JOHNSTON
