CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT In 2021, an exceptionally dry start to winter resulted in black ice forming over the entirety of Ruedi Reservoir. I made several excursions onto this rare phenomenon to look for abstract clusters of air bubbles in various layers of the ice. The simplicity of the snow-laden landscape makes for one of my favorite times of the year. The snow muffles sound and allows for silent, meditative photo excursions. During the harshest winters, with deep snowfalls, even the largest and most mature bull elk can be found along the lower Frying Pan River. I prefer to photograph animals when they are unaware of my presence, but sometimes those shared moments looking into each other’s eyes burn an indelible experience into my soul. 086 DEREK JOHNSTON
